At Fostering Futures Foundation, our mission doesn’t live only on paper — it lives in neighborhoods, schools, churches, and community spaces where families gather.
From holiday drives to scholarship fundraisers, we show up with resources, encouragement, and reminders that every child is seen, valued, and enough.
Here are a few of the ways we’ve served recently.
Book Signing & Community Literacy Events
From Story to Scholarship
In August 2025, Fostering Futures Foundation began not with a grant — but with a story.
Dr. Cheryl Slaughter Hurst and her family hosted a community book signing fundraiser for her debut book, Memoirs of an Adoptive Mother’s Meltdown: Motherhood, Mayhem, & Mental Health.
Supporters purchased copies both online at www.doctorcheryl.org and in person, gathering to celebrate storytelling, healing, and the power of shared experiences.
Through book sales alone, the event raised $5,000 to directly support the launch of Fostering Futures Foundation.
An additional $8,000 in sponsorships helped establish the organization’s first programs and scholarships. Special Thanks to Mrs. Cynthia “Princess” Hurst-Gamble for her generous donation of refreshments and gifts.
What began as one family’s story quickly became a movement to uplift many others.
Literacy & Financial Empowerment Outreach
In the months that followed, Dr. Slaughter Hurst continued engaging families through reading and financial literacy events throughout the Englewood community.
These gatherings promoted:
• a love of reading
• educational confidence
• financial empowerment
• and community connection
Events were warmly attended by families, youth, and local leaders — including distinguished guests such as Mayor Michael Wildes — all united around the belief that knowledge creates opportunity.
Through these efforts, Fostering Futures Foundation strengthened relationships and expanded awareness of scholarships, mentorship, and support services for youth impacted by foster care.
From books to scholarships, and from stories to futures — every page turned helps change a life.
Trunk or Treat Community Outreach
Fostering Futures Foundation proudly participated in a local Trunk or Treat community celebration, where families gathered in a safe, festive environment while cars lined the perimeter of neighborhood housing complexes and businesses to distribute treats to children.
Our team shared more than candy — we shared connection and encouragement.
Children received gift bags filled with:
• Foundation T-shirts
• Logo water bottles
• Candy
• Book-themed treat bags featuring Memoirs of an Adoptive Mother’s Meltdown
Events like these allow us to meet families where they are, build trust, and introduce youth to mentorship and scholarship opportunities in a joyful and welcoming space.
